Last week, the Leadership Maryland Executive Program Class of 2024 visited the western region of Maryland for the Criminal Justice session! Thursday kicked off with a Perceptions and Realities presentation given by the Western Maryland Region team. The Class of 2024 then headed off to the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Appalachian Laboratory for a tour of the facilities. Next, they visited Frostburg State University where they learned about the outdoor economy in Western Maryland. To finish the day, the Class of 2024 visited the Allegany County Sheriff's Office Detention Center, where they participated in a panel discussion on detention center programs and county crime statistics.
On Friday, Leadership Maryland visited the Roxbury Correctional Institution. This medium-security prison located in Hagerstown houses approximately 1,701 adult males. During their visit, the class participated in a discussion with incarcerated individuals and learned about Gatekeepers, a program created for inmates and ex-offenders entirely by ex-offenders who have experienced what it is like to re-enter society after having been incarcerated, to help inmates prepare their personal re-entry plan.
Thank you to our regional session sponsors Frostburg State University and the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
