Community Investment
The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is committed to how we collaborate throughout state government and statewide in the implementation of reform projects and initiatives including reentry, crime prevention, and community engagement. We actively engage with stakeholders and seek best practices in areas of diversion, intervention, rehabilitation, and prevention internally within DPSCS and externally in the community for a vast number of areas to support both adults and youth. Public safety and wellness are our priorities in an effort to reduce recidivism and to deter individuals from committing acts that would sentence them to prison. To accomplish this, we focus on a holistic approach by creating solutions designed to improve processes that help encourage incarcerated individuals and those already home to utilize rehabilitative services behind the walls and in the community. We will also work more to engage with youth through messaging and events to deter them from a life of crime, helping to inspire hope and opportunities.

Huber Memorial Church's Trunk-or-Treat!
Trunk-or-Treat, October 31, 2026
Bring your kids for an afternoon of trick-or-treating from decorated trunks, games, and food trucks. Costumes are encouraged for kids and grown-ups alike!

The Center for Mission & Community Education at MICA, in partnership with Jessup Correctional Institution (JCI), presents Creative Alchemy: Reaching Through the Wire, an exhibition featuring artists and artwork created by individuals who are currently or formerly incarcerated at JCI. This exhibition brings together two communities through art, creating a space for connection, reflection, and exchange across the physical and institutional boundaries. The exhibition highlights the creativity, lived experiences, and artistic voices of JCI-affiliated artists while inviting MICA and the broader Baltimore community to engage with their work.
Like alchemy, which sought to transform ordinary metals into gold, the creative process can transform emotions, memories, challenges, and hopes into works that inspire reflection, possibility, and connection. While walls and razor wire may separate people, creativity has the power to travel beyond them. Every work of art carries a story, a perspective, and a voice capable of reaching others in ways that words alone cannot.
