BECOMING A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER
Becoming a correctional officer with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is an honorable profession. Correctional Officers are charged with the care and custody of individuals sentenced by the courts to serve time in a state correctional facility and those awaiting a court trial and sentencing throughout the State of Maryland.
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is looking for dedicated individuals who seek a career in the criminal justice field. Becoming a part of our team can be very rewarding and includes many opportunities for growth and enrichment. Our entry-level Correctional Officer position will start you on the right path to a fulfilling career.
To get started, you will submit an application and sit for the Correctional Office exam. After passing the exam, you will be invited to undergo a comprehensive background screening to include: interview, fingerprinting, employment history, reference checks, education verification, psychological evaluation, physical examination, drug screening, and polygraph. Upon successful completion of the screening process, you will be assigned to an Institution in the region of your choice, and scheduled to attend the Maryland Correctional Entry Level Training Academy. The Correctional Training Academy is a fully paid, seven-week training course that will prepare you with a solid foundation for your career as a Correctional Officer.
