Incarcerated Individuals at Western Correctional Institution Create Holiday Cheer with Handcrafted Toys for Children in Need
Cumberland, MD - As the holiday season of giving fills Maryland communities, incarcerated individuals at Western Correctional Institution (WCI) are once again spreading holiday cheer through a meaningful tradition: crafting handcrafted wooden toys for less fortunate children involved in local charities across the Cumberland, Maryland region. In doing so, the incarcerated individuals have also learned meaningful work skills that will help them stay on the right course when they reenter society.

DPSCS Provides Update on Every Action Being Taken to Repair Heating at Baltimore Youth Detention Center
BALTIMORE, MD, December 8, 2025 - Today, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) provided the following update on its repairs to the heating system at the Youth Detention Center (YDC) in Baltimore after 2 compressors failed, causing temperatures to fall in the male housing units and the facility’s gym. Suggestions or reports that the entire facility is without heat are unfounded.

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Today, Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) Secretary Carolyn J. Scruggs announced the emergency transfer of individuals from the Maryland Reception, Diagnostics, and Classification Center, known as MRDCC, located in Baltimore City. The decision is in the interest of the safety and well-being of the facility's staff and incarcerated individuals.

The Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCI-W)
The Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCI-W), the CE Transition Entrepreneurship Academy celebrated the culmination of its 6-week entrepreneurial journey, where incarcerated women transformed ideas into real-world business concepts.
With guidance from community partners, entrepreneurship instructors, and guest mentors, participants learned to: Conduct market research, Develop sustainable products and services, Craft compelling pitches, and think like business leaders
In a true “Shark Tank” experience, finalists presented their pitches before a panel of judges, including representatives from the Maryland Department of Labor, showcasing hard work, creativity, and determination.
