BECOMING A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER

Becoming a correctional officer with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is an honorable profession.  Correctional Officers are charged with the care and custody of individuals sentenced by the courts to serve time in a state correctional facility and those awaiting a court trial and sentencing throughout the State of Maryland.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is looking for dedicated individuals who seek a career in the criminal justice field.  Becoming a part of our team can be very rewarding and includes many opportunities for growth and enrichment.  Our entry-level Correctional Officer position will start you on the right path to a fulfilling career.

To begin your career, first submit an application, successfully pass both a three person interview panel and writing sample assessment, and receive a conditional offer of employment. Next, you will undergo a comprehensive background screening to include: interview with an investigator, fingerprinting, employment history, reference checks, education verification, psychological evaluation, physical examination, drug screening, and polygraph. Once you successfully complete the screening process you will be assigned to an institution based on the counties selected on your application where you are willing to accept employment and scheduled to attend the Maryland Correctional Entry Level Training Academy in that region. The Correctional Training Academy is a fully paid, seven-week training course that will prepare you with a solid foundation for your career as a Correctional Officer.

Please keep in mind, as we endeavor to fill our team with reputable and dedicated members, the process from application to hire may take several months to complete; however, we strive to conduct all processes in a timely and professional manner.  We do hope you consider a career with our team, and we look forward to working with you. Thank you for your consideration!

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is proud of the men and women who have dedicated themselves to keep our communities safe.  It’s a career and duty they do not take lightly.

We look forward to assisting you in your journey to become part of our team.
