Narcotics Anonymous - Group Leader

  • Location: Jessup and Baltimore
  • Duties: We are seeking to establish recovery group meetings. The individual will be responsible for facilitating and leading recovery group, provide coaching via a 12-Step framework, seek out guest speakers supportive to the program, help offenders with developing recovery action plans, and formalize problem solving efforts directly related to recovery.
  • Requirements: Must be substance abuse free at least 1 yr. Should have experience with leading group sessions. Must be associated with an existing Narcotics Anonymous group/organization. Have knowledge of recovery principles.
  • Time commitment: Minimum of 2-3 hours per week or bi-weekly

Scenario-based Training Support Person

  • Location: Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions @ Police Entrance Level Training Program
  • Duties: Help with scenario-based training that is conducted with police recruits through majority of the role playing.  Individuals will be provided a brief script and will be called on to "act" the role during exchanges with the recruits.  
  • Requirements: do not need to have any experience with police work
  • Time Commitment: time varies for training however conducted between 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m; see below dates and time slots

Girl Scouts Beyond Bars

  • Location: Maryland Correctional Institution, Women, Jessup
  • Duties: This nationally acclaimed program allows girls to share time with their incarcerated mothers twice a month during Girl Scout troop meetings held at the prison. This is a partnership between DPSCS and Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. Candidates must complete screenings for both groups and pass a background check. A variety of volunteer positions are available:
    • Troop leader and co-troop leader on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (four volunteers needed)
    • Life skills trainers one Saturday morning per month (two volunteers needed)
    • Survey Administrators four times a year
    • Back-up bus driver and bus monitor as needed (approximately two - four times a year)

Sight-impaired Inmates Volunteer

  • Location: Roxbury Correctional Institution, Hagerstown
  • Duties: Teach sight-impaired incarcerated men to build the life skills (including braille) necessary to function more efficiently in prison and when released. Must be able to pass a criminal background check, verifiable experience working with sight-impaired individuals required.
  • Time commitment: Days and times are flexible

Licensed Social Worker

  • Location: Chesapeake Detention Center, Baltimore
  • Duties: Facilitate therapeutic and/or general life skills programming by conducting group sessions
  • Time commitment: Once per week (1-2 hours) or once per month – (2-3 hours)

Switchboard Operator

  • Location: Parole and Probation, Reisterstown Road Plaza, Baltimore
  • Duties: Provide administrative assistance: answering multiple phone lines; directing calls to appropriate staff; processing incoming and outgoing mail; performing data entry into automated programs.
  • Special skills needed: Knowledge of standard office principles and procedures, basic capabilities of using word processing applications, and ability to use general office equipment.
  • Time commitment: Minimum of 20-35 hours per week during regular business hours

Parole and Probation - Intern

  • Location: Various office locations through the State of Maryland
  • Duties: This is an opportunity for interns to have a better understanding of the Division of Parole and Probation and the duties performed by its agents. Selected interns’ duties will include, but will not be limited to: observing agents as they determine specific and effective supervision strategies; preparing files for transfer or court/parole proceeding; reviewing case notes; and performing data entry into automated programs
  • Special skills needed: Knowledge of standard office principles and procedures; basic capabilities of using word processing applications; and ability to use general office equipment
  • Time commitment: Required to perform at least 120 hours per assignment detail (no less than 10 hours per week)

Maryland Correction Enterprise - Guest Speaker

MCE is designed to create a workforce environment that closely resembles civilian employment

  • Location: Central Maryland Correctional Facility, Sykesville
  • Duties: To serve as the guest speaker for graduation ceremonies after offenders complete a six-month intense training program. The speaker will have to provide a 10 – 15 minute positive message enduring 10-15 minutes. The guest speaker will be an additional motivating presence for encouraging positive and successful living.
  • Special skills needed: Speakers should understand either personally or professionally the challenges that an offender could potentially experience during their transition back into society. Demonstrate ability to deliver a lasting message.
  • Time commitment: Periodically (no more than 2 twice per year); allot 1-2 hour of time to include the speech

Maryland Correction Enterprise - Mock Interviewers

MCE is designed to create a workforce environment that closely resembles civilian employment

  • Location: Central Maryland Correctional Facility, Sykesville
  • Duties: Testing interviewing skills of offenders in MCE’s reentry program. Mock Interviewers will also give feedback on ways participants can improve their abilities for marketing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to prospective employers.
  • Special skills needed: Mock interviewer should possess professional experience in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, evaluating, and/or training prospective job candidates
  • Time commitment: Periodically (no more than twice per year – tentatively June and December), for 2-4 hours

Maryland Correction Enterprise - Job Developer

MCE is designed to create a workforce environment that closely resembles civilian employment

  • Location: MCE headquarters in Jessup; most work from home
  • Duties: Job Developer would collaborate and coordinate with MCE’s Business Development Coordinator to locate employment opportunities through the State of Maryland to link with MCE’s reentry program graduates. Additional support is to conduct research of potential employer partners and present the benefits of hiring the program’s graduates.
  • Special skills: helpful ability to apply the principles of economic development and labor market trends; staying abreast of job opportunities; identify and contact prospective employers. Helpful backgrounds in human resources, sales, and human services.

Office of Religious Services – Community Resource Religious Expert /Faith-based Volunteer

  • Location: Baltimore, Maryland (most work via phone); if leading a worship activity location pending on the desired location to serve
  • Duties: We are seeking religious experts of our minority religions that are represented within incarcerated population. The selected persons will be a resource for information as it pertains to various practices of the religion which they are affiliated. If possible, the selected persons will provide a presentation once a year as it pertains to the religion. There may also be a possible opportunity to lead worship activities applicable to the religion. Seeking support for the following religions – Mormon, Native American, Nichiren –Buddhism, Odinism, Moorish Science Temple of America, and Wicca
  • Special skills: Must able to provide the Office of Religious Services with a religious endorsement letter which validates your years of experience, leadership, knowledge, and ability to serve an expert of the religion. Must have strong communication skills.
  • Time commitment: Flexible; if volunteering to support religious groups, 2 hours per week

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteering is based on your individual skills and interests; however there are a few things all DPSCS volunteers have in common

  • Must be at least 18 years old (21 in facilities)
  • Must not be under current criminal supervision
  • MUST have an interest in making a difference in Maryland’s Public Safety!
